Inauguration Message from President Hirotaka Sugiyama

I am Hirotaka Sugiyama, and I have been appointed the new President of Josuikai. I am deeply honored to have been nominated as former President Tsuyoshi Okamoto’s successor. As Josuikai celebrates its 105th anniversary this year, I am instilled with a strong sense of mission by this great responsibility, given the significance of Josuikai’s history, as well as its tradition fostered by many of our predecessors. After assuming office in 2015, former President Okamoto made significant contributions to the advancement of education and academic research at Hitotsubashi University in such areas as study abroad programs for university students, overseas research activities by young faculty members, and support for student job placements through the Frontier 4 Foundation  and the Hitotsubashi Daigaku Koenkai. In addition, while consolidating an important income base for Josuikai’s operations by filling Josuikai Building’s rental office floors to full capacity, Mr. Okamoto strived to make broader contributions to Japan’s political, economic, social, and cultural development, thereby further enhancing the good reputation of Hitotsubashi University and Josuikai. On behalf of all our members, I would like to express our deep respect and gratitude for his contributions and achievements. The aim of Josuikai is to “assist in achieving the goals and mandate of Hitotsubashi University.” Our top priority is to offer cooperation and support to our alma mater to fulfill this aim. In light of the amendment of Hitotsubashi University’s regulations last year, university officials who have been serving as members of Josuikai’s board or committees will no longer continue their duties. This change was in response to policy-related and social requirements to strengthen governance and compliance at national universities. However, we do not believe that this will affect collaboration between the university and Josuikai. Josuikai operates with 82 chapters across Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa, and 52 chapters overseas. In addition, the class associations and interest-based clubs are also part of this big Josuikai network. I intend to continue to support our alma mater by leveraging these strong bonds. I will exert further efforts and do my very best to fulfill my responsibilities in order to build an even closer relationship with the university. While maintaining the independence of decision-making on both sides and the transparency of our organizational links, I will work vigorously to advance both Hitotsubashi University and Josuikai, and to fulfill Josuikai’s aim. To this end, I would like to ask all our members for cooperation and support. Lastly, I would like to end my inauguration message by conveying my heartfelt gratitude to the officers who have worked so hard in the performance of their duties.
